ABOUT

Hello! My name is Tanner Galvin. I am a  mid-aged Dad living in beautiful Portland Oregon.

Noystoise started as a Circuit-bending blog in 2008, and has been a place for me to write and show my developing skills as an artist and self-taught electronic engineer.

HISTORY

I first discovered Circuit-bending in 2003-2004 when the original legendary Circuit-benders were in their prime, and the Circuit-bending subculture had seemed to peak.

With the intention of making instruments for my own use and recording, I took inspiration from artists like Reed Ghazala, Bill T Miller, Tablebeast, and music groups like Dat Politics, Nullsleep, and anything else that was pushing new boundaries with obsolete technology and/or DIY hacking, but with creative aesthetic. Unfortunately, my music was not very good.

Circuit-bending changed for me when I discovered Pete Edwards' Casper Electronics site. Upon seeing what was possible with electronics and art coming together, I quickly became obsessed with the medium, and began my own decades-long online exhibition as Noystoise, the Circuit-bender.

NOW

Circuit-bending has evolved for me over the years as I have learned more proper theory in electronics and circuit design. I learn more with each new project I finish.

Designing my own circuits is mostly what I do now, but always with a Circuit-bender's curiosity for hidden possibilities that might have been overlooked during planning.

Incorporating recycled toys, classic electronics design aesthetic, and modern hardware and manufacturing methods is central to my approach for creating visually novel, but also functionally unique artwork.

Sharing my process with others, and learning from helpful hackers here on my blog, or around other online DIY communities has kept me engaged and inspired to keep growing as an an artist and designer.

 BUY

I sell most of my creations through this site. If you would like to buy something from me, check the FOR SALE page for current listings. People often mistake me for a small manufacturer, but I actually hand-build everything myself.

I have no intention of growing Noystoise into a retail brand, so availability of certain designs is extremely limited, and more often limited to one-off's. However, some designs can be recreated to order. Please feel free to inquire.

Commissions, circuit design, and electronics repair/modifications are another way for me to make extra money to support this hobby, but my availability is pretty limited. Contact me for a quote.

SUPPORT

I take pride in my work as an artist, and in all of the art pieces I have created over the years, and I am always willing to repair the instruments I have built, when needed.

If you are in possession of a Noystoise instrument, whether you purchased it directly from me, or from a third party, I will do any necessary repairs for the price of shipping and the cost of materials only.
